A Socom2/Socom3 Throwback Tournament

Would the community be interested in a throwback S2/S3 tournament?

@PRE_-CISION-_ is right you guys. X-link is unreliable and people can easily cheat. These 2 make the effort pointless.

This is for fun and exposure purposes. If a team cheats I'm sure we are able to deal with that efficiently and keep the tournament going. We can establish rules. Keep in mind that this is not for a World Championship and neither playing for millions of dollar. Look at the title : THROWBACK Tournament. Put your high egos aside and enjoy playing no?
  3. There a step to step guide at http://socom-xlink.net/xlink/smartguide.php. Really people make it over complication you just hook xlink kai up and play. It should actually just work like that in some cases. You really only need to have add on steps if it doesn't work. Other thing is lot of times people add steps in to their guide without understanding why.

Me myself I have no interest of updating my smartguide as it seems pointless to me since I replacing XLink with a solution that will just work on first setup if not it alerts the user and tell them what they need to do as on XLink I personally can't stand when I see random people flooding new people heads with non sense of how XLink works. Really it like the USS Forrestal fire when everyone felt their were firefighters and it just made things worse. On XLink Kai some people think their a XLink Specialist. It nice people want to help, but it really confuses people and I don't know how many times I try helping someone, but people but in which confuses new people.

I tried using that guide and here's my experience:

Other than that mistake, pretty cool idea and I'll try it out soon.

People aren't against a tournament, Hastan. People are against adding money into the mix. Adding money into the tournament is unquestionably a terrible idea, for the reasons that have already been mentioned. X-Link is too unstable and unreliable, and because of the inevitable cheating that would occur. No, you can't deal with cheating efficiently, because there's no way to detect it unless it's something obviously blatant like flying around the map. If someone has something like e-tags, there's no way of knowing.

Again, a tournament is a decent idea, but it's not a necessity. What X-Link SOCOM needs more than anything else is just grassroots promotion and play each week to drip-feed in new members and new players on a weekly basis so that it can grow naturally over time.

If someone can make some money by using codes (and so many people are using codes right now), then they're gonna do it because they can't get caught. How are you going to prove that they're cheating?

The only thing to possibly prove they are cheating is to have spectator mode on, have someone stream it with a 5 or 6 min delay to prevent stream sniping and keep an eye out on people who look sketchy.

Even then, they will just deny it and claim otherwise. If people use jokered codes its gonna be really difficult to prove it, trust me I know from my S1 days on socom/gb. I honestly can't believe xlink has dipshits cheating on it still. Game is what 14 years old now?

What if we found a way to rent out a place and we played in person on LAN? That would be the only true way to make sure no one is cheating. We could have only one game going at a time so we don't need that many PS2's on hand besides a few extra in case of a malfunction.

It would take some time to plan out but if we really wanted to it could be done.

We keep throwing around shit like Chicago, Atlantic City, or [wherever the hell Swill lives] Florida for a TRS gathering. Nothing set in stone, just talk. But I'd totally be down.

Exactly this, especially if you want to involve money. It would only need to be a small conference room of some sort, and we could have a buy in system so the costs get split evenly & whatever is leftover is prize money. It would be cool if we could get Harry's patch onto all the PS2s participating (we would put the patch at the tourney) that way there would be no wall sliding and Abandoned would be daytime. The tourney could be streamed on Twitch for people that can't go too, it would be a huge effort to pull it off though.

You know, San Antonio is right in the middle of the country, has great food, and has a cost of living that is uncommonly low for a city its size.

I've been wanting to have a S2 LAN party for the longest time, I have the room for it all at my place. Have an entire finished basement, could set it up in the room across from the theater room.

I have a sweet spot for San Antonio. When I was 16 I met a very hot chick from there during summer vac. Somebody was very lucky in San Antonio to land her.

@Swill you might be right, maybe there is no way to have a money tournament without cheating. My original thoughts on it were that we would just have reputable clans that the community knows and that have always had a long standing faith in not cheating because I feel like the people you would have to worry about cheating would be the people who still lurk on XLink S2 that nobody knows and abuse the game for their own enjoyment.

And to the point somebody brought up about they think that this tournament will only give XLink a one day pop and then the numbers will go back down to what they were I completely disagree. I think if there is an incentive for people to play, old clan pride or whatever that once they have all their stuff hooked up and know how to work the program that they will falll in love with having the option to play Socom again.

I think we can all say that there is still nothing like that feeling of playing Socom even if it's been so many years since the last time it was active
