America's Army PS4 free to play 1st person SOCOM

    I have yet to play tonight but the latest patch dropped. It supposedly fixed matchmaking and party related issues. Word on the street is a solid thumbs up so far.

    I actually ran into you maybe a week ago? I said hi but I think the in game mic glitch was going on. Would of stuck around to see if it fixed but I hit the sack after that. You're welcome to team up sometime if you want to hang

    I think if they cut the price in half it would move more copies!!
    I downloaded this game last week but have yet to play it. i did watch some streams though and it looked pretty decent. the hit detection seemed to be there and i really didnt see any major lag issues or anything. the only thing i saw that i didnt like was the maps seemed to be really small. how do they compare to socom or cod maps as far as size goes?

    The maps vary in size quite a bit. There is a large desert map, a very small Frostfire like map, a medium sized jungle map, a medium hospital map with 3 stories, a huge train station map with multiple levels, a small urban map that is one big choke point with flanks, and two urban maps that are both my favorites.

    The reference to ping and hit detection I mentioned happened last night. I noticed the more servers I left and joined, the more my ping started to increase over time. In the 90s+ I would see blood and headshots on my end but couldn't kill people. One guy took 4 rounds of a shotgun point blank, which is usually a 1 or 2 shot kill at most. Once I rebooted and joined a fresh server I had no problems. But it was frustrating until I figured out that was what was happening. Hopefully the patch took care of that. It did take a few hours for that to develop though so it's not a major bug.

    i never would have guessed the maps varied that much. I watched 3 different streams and they were all the same map and the people never went more than 100 feet out of their spawns. seemed like they took about 50 steps and started hucking frags and getting shot. i dont know what the map was called but it looked like a bunch of small buildings or maybe a construction site or something. the one guy went to the same building every time and shot through the window into another building about 50 feet away that looked like it was connected with a catwalk or something.

    Sounds like the map Crossfire....

    There are usually 3 types of rooms going on in AA. Extreme camping, or running around like chickens with their heads cut off just looking to challenge aim & reaction times. (the COD generation - shit talking their kills and blaming the room for their loss - all run-n-gun or heavy camping. You know, basically idiots with a mic that want the world to revel in their self-worth?)

    The third is objective-based teamwork rooms where the mics are being used for strats, and they will chew you out for being an idiot. (and potentially TK you with an "accidental" grenade so they aren't auto-kicked)

    I enjoy all 3 rooms because they each offer a different flavor of fun for me. There's nothing more satisfying than smacking a shit-talker mid-map who thinks he can rush after bragging about his GB team on COD, or flash banging and steamrolling campers who think belly dancing 5 deep in their spawn is "tactical" and requires "skill".

    They all want to be Rambo, and if they can't, they rage quit and cry until they get muted. And their salty tears give me inspiration. If you find a solid squad that communicates, revives and secures, you can coast through victories all night.

    On the flipside, there have been countless rooms without assholes where people are being very helpful, both sides are laughing hysterically at each other the entire match, and newcomers talking about how much fun the game can be.

    All kidding aside though, some objectives are very one-sided and others are pretty neutral. That dictates a lot of field position depending on the map and the intellect of the team.

    I have only played one game so far, but it was a little rough for me. I thought the gameplay seemed a little odd. I think I understand their going for a minimalistic approach to the HUD and crap popping up on the screen but I was having a hard time telling how many people were alive. Maybe that is by design. It also didn't help I didn't really know what the hell was going on in the game mode I played but that isn't the games fault.

    I am not sure what I think about the shooting mechanics yet, the recoil seems a little weird, but I think my biggest problem is readjusting to using a controller.

    I would like to know if its possible to organize clan wars or if it will be in the future.

    Either way it seems like a fairly decent round based shooter on the PS4, and its free. Anyone with a PS4 and PS+ (I am assuming you need PS+) can try this for no additional cost...its pretty hard to complain too much even if you don't like it.

    Without breaking everything down in detail...it would be nice for this community for once to rally around an actual good game. Whole mentality I like games without bells and whistles in my opinion is a cop out since most eSports related games have their own rule sets that eliminate any or most cheese that the core game might have.

    You're right about the 6 months for most games, unless its games like CS:GO, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Battlefield etc... I was being super generous, I don't give it any time since its DOA and rightfully so.

    Maybe I'm the weird one that is demanding too much, I'm sorry but quite frankly I don't have time to waste on terrible ass games and I don't have time to sit here and cheer on any dev to make the game I want to play or to help improve a broken experience.

    Maybe it's the old age but I rather be playing games and having fun with friends and not put myself in these positions where I hate everything about my hobby because I keep putting myself into position of playing unfinished and broken games.

    Problem is not money, I'm willing to shell out $60 on a good game rather than play this garbage for free.

    It's simply about time @S_L_I_C_K I don't have time to play something that's broken and in this state. I think WE DESERVE BETTER and I think that's how we all should approach games.

    But this community has a rich history of supporting and gravitating towards games that lead to dead ends...I'll be the first one to support any cause if I see it has a good foundation but so far none of the games, mods, projects etc... have shown that to me...

Let me be dissuaded; you're absolutely right Luke, what I got to lose but time...Unless that is a commodity, but I've always been generous with mine.

    Yeah i get what you are saying here but from what I have seen this game is the closest thing to a socom we have seen in some time, and it is the only dev that seems to be open to making it more like a socom game, and the only dev to actually put something out that is playable. I still have not played it so I still dont know much about it but I am all about playing a crappy game and helping them form it into something better if they are willing to do so. On the other hand, i am not at all desperate for a socom game, i can take it or leave it at this point. games like 7 days to die (really buggy game, but fun) ark, and fornite have been my go to games instead of the pvp games the last few years. I more prefer coop to pvp anymore which is amazing to me since I played nothing but socom from socom 1-con.

    Yeah if you haven't played AA:pG yet give it a shot.

    But don't fool yourself thinking this game is anything like SOCOM when it's not. Only thing it has in common is its (round based) and that's where it ends.

    This is what I mean by foundation, I simply don't see one here. This is a government owned IP used as a recruiting tool. This dev will not have the budget or freedom to take this game anywhere, otherwise they would have but nothing has really changed since it's original release in 2015 on steam. In fact this one seems to be a step backwards from the PC version...

    In any case I hope you enjoy it but for me personally this is just another one of those games that comes through this community and I don't see it going anywhere...

    No offense, but they are so whack I'm gonna rent for 3 days for the campaign and stick it back in da box.

    SO tied of this trash being sampled over and over and over. Boots on the ground--FINALLY?!? Um, all done with the era as I did it to death last fall. Can I go for another lap around the WW whatever iteration? SP only because of the large set pieces and big action.

    I debated working there for a time and turned down an offer from Ms. Weiland. It had to be worse than what I settled on instead which is pretty fucking terrible most days...

    Welp, I hope anyways. hindsight and all that...

    And shit, @PRE_-CISION-_ I didn't know your modding for them on Reddit already. That's pretty sweet! Congratulations! Keep us informed, ok?
    I coulda SWORE it was that simulator shit recruits ACTUALLY used as well. It was atrocious and I think exactly why they are having MP issues as it was hooked up to a gun and you played on a Conference room screen in a tactical dungeon on a base. It was garbo. All of them were. BUT I will try it and see for myself all the same. Even I am not that obtuse, but I sort of agree with HTK in that if they have no cash how they supposed to develop inside the PS4? Is it only gonna be patches from here on out? Can you patch in 3rd person? Not sure. Answers people!

    Well heres the thing Americas Army used to be a really and I mean really good tactical shooter. 1HK, no revive shit, tactical movement, required you to use sound. In the days of Americas Army 2.0 I spent just about equal time playing that as I did SOCOM. Americas Army 3 came out could have been the next great improvement on AA2.0 but the US Army game studio dropped the ball, I mean so bad that the Pentagon did something they don't normally do: Fire people. They fired the whole dev team. Replaced it but they could never recover. AA3 was a lost. When they first came out with AAPG I played the alpha, and first beta, I was surprised. The pace of the game changed, everything changed: the feel, the gameplay became more run and gun. AAPG isn't catered to trying to recreate an authentic experience anymore. Its more catered to the Call of Duty Generation of gamers. In AA2 you actually had to pass training courses before you can play certain roles or certain maps. For example Hospital used be known as SF Hospital where one team was trying to escort a VIP out of the hospital, while the other team tried to kill the VIP. In order to play as an SF role on that map you had to complete all the training mission including the crazy hard escape and evade training. If you didn't you could only play as an indigenous forces role with AKs and the like. There was a whole tactical community that was built around AA2. Alot of the old timers who are looking for the same thing many people who played SOCOM are looking for looked at AAPG and walked away after a few days or weeks of playing.

    You are actually thinking of DARWARS Ambush! which was shit which has been replaced by the much much better VBS2(Virtual Battlespace 2) which did have its early issues but not as bad as DARWARS Ambush! was. I currently have a copy of VBS2 and its successor VBS3 which is miles ahead of VBS2. Both are like even more detailed ArmA games that we would never see on the civi market.

    Essentially the future of the game comes down to...

    - finish hammering out server/group/frame issues
    - implement clan tags & potentially more
    - get some version of private matches up for competitive
    - bring over new maps
    - develop based on community feedback

    Not much more to it outside of that. Can't beat free and there's legitimately zero shooters I'm interested in until Star Wars so I'll be busy with AA for awhile

    Got the chance to play for a bit today and I really liked it. The shooting mechanics were pretty solid and everyone in the room had mics and were working together. Definitely going to play this more.
